Listen to the recording again with the tapescript.

C:
Right, well, my proposal is that we launch a major campaign to reduce people’s currently high levels of salt consumption.
P:
Salt consumption?
C:
That’s right. Eating too much salt is a significant risk factor in developing high blood pressure, which causes nearly 200,000 deaths each year.
P:
Okay, let’s hear what you have to say.
C:
Right, well one reason I favor this campaign is that almost half of the population eat more than the daily recommended amount of salt, which is 6 grams a day. So, you can see that this affects a large number of people, can’t you? Secondly, changing salt consumption habits has a quick and tangible effect. By this I mean that within just four weeks of reducing your salt consumption, your blood pressure will be lower. That’s exactly the kind of thing that people want to see – an immediate result of their actions. Basically, a simple and slight change to life style can have a dramatic effect.
P:
Fair enough, and quite convincing. Have you had any thoughts about the shape that the campaign could take?
C:
Yes, I have. So, obviously, the main aim of the campaign is to get people to reduce their salt intake. Firstly, we need to make sure that people can find out how much salt they’re consuming, and I think this means that we have to lobby the food industry for improved labeling on food packaging, and, secondly, we also need to press the food companies to reduce the salt content of processed foods – you know the kind of thing, microwave meals, crisps, etc. If we do these two things, people will inevitably be eating less salt, and also they’ll be able to monitor their salt intake. Thirdly, we of course have to run a major publicity campaign to inform the public about the effects of salt. In this case, the fact that the problem’s so widespread means a TV advertising campaign’s fully justified. While I accept that that’d be expensive, it’d be the most direct way to reach such a large target audience. A key part of the strategy hare would be to have a humorous approach to make the message memorable.
P:
OK, and I guess you’d have a poster campaign as well, and an internet presence of some sort, wouldn’t you?
C:
Absolutely, and on the Internet we’ll provide factsheets and have some blogs written by people who are reducing their salt intake. You know the kind of thing, weekly updates about the changes in their diet, how their health is improving, etc. So, what do you think?
Watch the video again with the transcript
In a very inspiring start to the week right now—the story of Breanna Bond. At just 9 years old, she weighed almost 200 pounds. One of the millions of American kids struggling with obesity. But in less than a year, Breanna transformed her body and her life. We are going to meet Breanna and her parents in just a moment. Take a look first at her remarkable journey.
By the time she was 9 years old, Breanna Bond was 186 pounds. The extra weight made it difficult for her to breathe and move around. She soon became a target for bullies.
Everybody at school would call me names. They would call me fatty, they would call me fathead.
Say hi! Hi!
Breanna’s weight gain began when she was just a baby. By kindergarten, she was 100 pounds.
When I was playing with my friends, if they were running, I couldn’t keep up.
Honey, do you want some tomato, basil, and mozzarella? Yeah!
So Breanna’s mom decided to take matters into her own hands and designed an exercise routine for her daughter. The entire family began walking a 4 mile trail near their home. Before long, Breanna lost 37 pounds. Along with a healthy diet that limits fat to 20 grams a day, Breanna also began hitting her home treadmill for an hour and fifteen minutes every day. She began playing basketball and joined the swim team. She inspires me on a daily basis. She is an inspiration to the world and all children who are having weight issues across America that you can do it with a pair of tennis shoes and motivation. It has totally changed the course whole life.
And wait till you see Breanna now, are you ready to come out? Come on Breanna. Come on over! You look fantastic! So you lost now what? 66 pounds! How do you feel?
Great!
I’ll bet you do, and you look so great right now. You look so healthy and happy. Heidi and Dan Bond, Breanna’s parents are here as well. And Heidi, you took the initiative here, you really started this. And there are so many parents out there that have the same struggle. Tell us how you did it.
Well, how we do it is an hour and fifteen minutes a day on the treadmill. Out of that, we run 25 minutes. She, along with healthy eating—we changed our eating habits completely.
So give us an example.
For example, we focus on fat grams. So we, as a family, are on 20 grams of fat or less and as low as sugar as possible. But this, this was not easy. And dad, I know it took some tough love.
Absolutely, yeah. We’ve got a stubborn little girl here and....
Woah! She begs to differ.
Yeah…and uh, yeah, there were definitely some battles.
What was the hardest part for you?
Um, when I first started, it was the walking, because it was just that... I wasn’t used to it.
But you just went out and you guys did it every single day as a family.
Yes, in the beginning we did it as a family and there was nothing that stopped us. We went at night, in the rain, in the hell, in the fog—nothing. We had a zero tolerance policy—we are doing the walk no matter what.
And this wasn’t just, you know, unhealthy eating habits. This was something you knew from the beginning, when Breanna was a baby, that she was going to have to struggle with this.
Yeah, slow metabolism. Her pediatrician always said she would grow into her body.
And then, after a while we went and got other doctors opinions, we had her tested for everything from thyroid to diabetes. Her endocrinology got tested, allergies, and everything came out fine. So we knew at that point that we had to step things up. She joined a swim team, um, a few months into that she still gaining weight.
How has this changed your life? All good? What’s the best part?
Um, that I can be involved with sports and I could keep up with my friends when we’re playing. I can just move more.
That makes a big difference. And finally, we just have a few seconds left. But what would you say, if parents are watching, what is the one big piece of advice you’d give them?
Is to start as soon as possible. Exercise, healthy eating habits.
Yeah, and don’t be afraid to do the tough love. I mean, it’s worth it in the long run, it’s their life at stake It sure is. You all look great, you all look happy. Congratulations, thanks for coming in this morning!
Thank you.
