Bối cảnh của bài là cảnh 2 người bạn cũ gặp lại và nhận ra nhau. Vì thế, nhất định họ sẽ nhắc lại là đã từng là bạn học, đồng nghiệp học hàng xóm. Hơn nữa, hai người đó sẽ hỏi nhau về cuộc sống hiện tại, như sau:

Woman: Hey! Is that Bill?

Man: Ah, yeah... Um...

Woman: Do you remember me from school?

Man: I'm sorry... I'm don't remember you. Did we study together?

Woman: Yes. And we lived on the same dorm, too.

Man: Really? What floor did you live on?

Woman: I lived on the ninth floor. You live on the seventh floor.

Man: That's right. How did you know?

Woman: I would see you in the elevator sometimes.

Man: I'm sorry. I don't remember you.

Woman: It's alright. It was several years ago.

Man: Well, anyway, it's nice to meet you again. Ah...

Woman: Monica...

Man: Monica Sayles, right?

Woman: Yes! See, so you do remember me!

Man: Ok. So, where do you live now?

Woman: I live in an apartment.

Man: Oh! Do you live with your parents?

Woman: No. My parents moved to the country.

Man: Ah...They must be very happy there.

Woman: Yes, they enjoy it very much!

Man: So, do you live alone?

Woman: No, I share the apartment with an old friend.

Man: Really? A friend...Is he a boyfriend?

Woman: No, she's an old friend from school. We've known each other for many years. How about you, Bill? Where do you live?

Man: Oh, I rent an apartment. I'm by myself.

Woman: Do you like it there?

Man: Yeah, but it's kind of noisy.

Woman: Oh... Maybe you should complain with your neighbors.

Man:  Oh no no no... I'm the one who makes the noise!

 Hey, is that Bill?

Bạn gần như chỉ nghe thấy "that Bill" mà không nghe thấy "is".

Đó là hiện tượng hiện tượng tỉnh lược. Khi nói nhanh, người ta thường rút ngắn gọn, lược bỏ những trợ động từ đi. Rút gọn sao cho, sau khi rút gọn, câu nói vẫn có nghĩa, người nghe vẫn hiểu được.

Eg.

 Is that Bill?  ( bỏ tợ động từ "is")

Hoặc

Have you got the time?

=> You got the time?

Did you see her last night?

=> You see 'er last night?

( Đôi khi "her" bị đọc thành "er", bỏ mất âm "h")

Nhưng bạn chú ý nhé, chỉ những cuộc nói chuyện bình thường và thân mật bạn mới nên dùng những câu thế này thôi. Tuyệt đối tránh dùng trong những cuộc nói chuyện mang tính chất trang trọng và nghiêm túc.
