Invented by a fifteen-year-old boy Chester Greenwood, the earmuffs are celebrated each year on March 13th in the United States. It is most certain that the day is appreciated by those who live in, have lived in or visit places of cold climates.
It was on March 13, 1877 that Chester Greenwood from Farmington, Maine, was awarded a patent for his invention of earmuffs. Four years earlier, fifteen-year-old Chester Greenwood came up with the idea after trying to keep his ears warm while ice skating. At first, he had tied his scarf around his head, but it was too bulky and itchy. Later, he knew exactly what to do to solve the problem. Chester made two ear-shaped loops from wire and asked his grandmother to sew fur on them when he got home. That is how the earmuffs were invented.
He called his new invention the Champion Ear Protector and started a factory to manufacture his invention. Later, the name was changed to earmuffs, and during World War I he made a lot of money by selling earmuffs to American soldiers. Chester invented many other things but the earmuffs are the invention that people remember him for.
Today earmuffs come in many, many different styles. His hometown is very proud of Chester. In 1977, the town declared December 21 Chester Greenwood Day. Farmington, Maine is now recognized as the Earmuff Capital of the World.
