Did you know that in English there are numbers of expression about the kitchen? In this lesson I am going to share three of them. Let’s start with one of my favors “everything but the kitchen sink”. This expression means too many things or a lot of unnecessary things. For example, my grandfather used to joke to say that my grandmother carried every thing but the kitchen sink and her purses. And I have one of the bags which is used to belong to my grandmother, inside she really did carry a lot of things, everything from flash light to the photos albums, she truly carry everything but the kitchen sink with her. Let’s go on to the second expression, over here I have a frying pan and fire, this expression “out of frying pan and into the fire” means you just fall in the bad situation to another perhaps even the worst. Last expression let’s begin by looking up here you see the ceiling fan, it’s quite common that they have a ceiling fan in the kitchen because when we cook, we get hot and who likes to be in the room that’s really hot. We say “if you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen”, it means if you can’t handle the competition, then quit or don’t even start at the first place, ok? So here are three expressions I show you here “Everything but the kitchen sink” means “too many things or a lot of unnecessary things” Then we have: “out of the frying pan and into the fire” which means you just begin in one bad situation and now you are in another perhaps even the worst. And “if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen”, you can also say “if you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen” which means if you can’t face the competition, you should just quit or don’t even start at the first place. Alright, let’s see how well you understand, on your screen you’re going to see three conversations, hit the pass button, read the conversation and see if you know which expression complete each one. When you ready, press play and then you are going to hear the complete conversation, ok? Here is the first Jennifer: You win again! Tim: You’re getting better, though. Jennifer: I’m not sure I like playing cards with you! I never win. Tim: You know what they say: if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Conversation 2: Jennifer: Can you help me with my suitcase? Tim: Sure … Wow! It’s heavy. What did you do? Pack everything but the kitchen sink? Jennifer: No, It’s just clothes and stuff. Tim: You don’t need that many things. We’re only going away for the weekend. Conversation 3: Tim: Do you like the new manager at work? Jennifer: Well, the old one used to yell a lot when she got angry, but other than that she ran the office well. The new one is friendly, but he’s creating a mess by changing everything. Tim: out of the frying pan into the fire If you like what you see then remember you can also subscribe that way you can this lesson automatically, thank you and goodbye. |
