The past perfect tense
The past perfect tene.
To make the past perfect tense use “had” after the subject and the past participle.
If I take the verb like “go”. The simple form is “go”, past tense is “went”, the past participle is “gone”.
I had gone.
You had gone
He/she/it had gone.
We had gone
You had gone
They had gone
This is an irregular verb.
Do you know the past participles for irregular verbs?
If the regular verb like “live”, past tense “lived”, in the past participle is also “lived”
Remember with regular verbs, the past tense and the past participle look the same.
I had lived, using the past participle
You had lived
He had lived
We had lived
You had lived
They had lived
To make the negative use “had” and “not” and then the past participle.
When “had” and “not” are together, it sounds like “hadn’t”:
I hadn’t gone, you hadn’t gone, he hadn’t gone,
Why do we use the past perfect?
The past perfect takes place before another past action.
For example: He had lived in many different places before he moved to Minnesota.
This is the past: He moved to Minnesota.
And here: He had lived in many different places
“had lived” takes places here before this past action going back to some privious past actions.
I had taught at many different schools before I came to this one.
They had never been to New York until last year.
She’d had many bad jobs in the past, but her new job is okay.
To make the contraction use ’d
I’d never seen that before.
They’d eaten the whole pizza before I arrived.
