Bài 24: Liên từ (List of conjunctions)

List of conjunctions

Hei, this is the list of it from english-grammar-revolution

The website that teaches grammar the easy ways through sentence style grounding

And you’re looking for a list of conjunctions

So I find I’d share with you my page that covers the list of conjunctions

Before we go over the list of conjunctions, let’s just do its quick refresher about what a conjunction is

A conjunction is the word that joins two or more words, phrases or clauses

So it’s a joining words, it connects things

And there are a few different types of conjunctions

There are “Coordinating conjunctions”

And there are only 7 of these

So you don’t have too much to remember here

The coordinating conjunctions are “for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so”

And you can remember all of those seven coordinating conjunctions with this acronym here FANBOYS

It stands “for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so”

And here’s an example of how coordinating conjunctions connect conjunctions connect the conjunctions words, I’m sorry

Here’s connecting two words “cookies” and “milk”

So here is a conjunction

And it’s connecting the two words in this sentence

Ok, moving on to the next types of conjunctions “Subordinating conjunctions”

“Subordinating conjunctions”  are conjunctions that link independent clauses and dependent clauses

So in independent clause can stand along and dependent clause can not

The role of subordinating conjunctions is to link dependent clause to the independent clause

So here’s a list of those conjunctions: “after, although, as, as if, as long as, as much as, as soon as, as though”

Note is that sometimes conjunctions are made up of two or more words

This conjunction right here “as if” is two words but it’s acting as one conjunction

So it just counts as one part of speech same words “as long as, as much as, as soon as and as though”

And the last of conjunctions is the correlative conjunction

And these are always used in pairs

So we always use two of them. Both….and, either….or, neither… nor, not only…but also, whether…or

For instance, we can have the sentence

This cookie contains neither chocolate nor nuts

I don’t know why you want even if it doesn’t contain chocolate or nuts

But anyway, that’s an example of correlative conjunctions

Both of those conjunctions are  being used there and it's joining these two words “chocolate” and “nuts”

Now, if you like to see how conjunctions are diagram, let’s take a look at next

Sentence diagram is the way to show how the words in the sentence are related to each other

And really cool thing about sentence style diagram in the conjunctions is that you can really see how conjunctions link or connect words, phrases or clauses

So we diagram them by puting them in the dotted line between the things that they connect

Now, I understand you may have no idea what the thing here is showing here

But this is a subject of the sentence

And this is the verb and this is the verb

And this would be a coordinating conjunction and you can see that it’s joining those two words

So this might say something like “He jumped and ran”

“He jumped and ran”

And so that coordinating conjunction would be connecting the word “jump” and “ran”

Here’s another coordinating conjunction

And you can see that this one is joining together to clauses because the subject and the verb are set up here

And another subject and verb down here

This is doted line here, this coordinating conjunction is joining the two clauses

And this is also how you would diagram correlative conjunctions if you have “either …or”, “neither…nor” you'll just diagram that word or those words on this dotted line

If you have subordinating conjunctions, you diagram them just like this

Subordinating conjunctions, remember connect dependent clauses to independent clauses

And since you know they're connecting things and they go on doted line, you just connect them on this slanted line this time

So this appear this vertical line so that this and this is two group of words here are independent clauses

Will you have it on.. an angle line like this. Excuse me!

That is showing that this group of words on here is the dependent clause and this is an independent clause

And here we have surbordinating conjunction join that use red on that dotted line

So maybe this sentence would say “The dog ran after the cat meowed

That would be an example

And you can get alot more information on sentence diagram in and only just on conjuctions if you got my website
